A Little History
In the beginning
When you spend the night at the Sweet Lemon Inn, you are immersed in the history of Texas…
We pick up the story on August 19th, 1844, when Sam Houston, President of the Republic of Texas, executed a land grant to Clement Stubblefield for what would become, in May 1848, the City of Georgetown and the county seat of Williamson County.
Walk through Foundation Park, the adjacent property, and you will find a granite marker that memorializes the founding of the town under a live oak that grew on the property line of what is now 812 S Church Street.
On the original plat of Georgetown (Block 1, Lot 4), this property was purchased by J. J. Cluck in 1882 for $200 and the home built in 1918 for J. J. ‘s son John M. Cluck and his wife Ida Taylor Cluck. The upstairs which the Sweet Lemon Inn now occupies was added in 1923 and became a boarding house for various renters during World War II.
The property remained in the Cluck family for more than 90 years, when after a brief stint with the McCreless family, the home was purchased by Horace C. “Pete”and Carolyn Sweet (yes, Sweet!) in 1978. The property was rezoned to commercial use in the 1990s and went through a number of iterations, including restaurant, spa and office space before opening as the Sweet Lemon.
Rachel and Kevin Cummins purchased the property in 2013 and (with lots of help from friends and family near and far) began an extensive renovation to create the Sweet Lemon. The Inn opened upstairs in March of 2014 to become the first lodging option on the Georgetown Square since the Inn on the Square welcomed its last guest in 2005.
Lots more history is in the making – come be a part of it! Our Cafe Sweet Lemon Kitchen , downstairs, is NOW OPEN for breakfast and lunch Tues. – Sat. 7am – 2:30pm.
